Syllabus


​Course Description
Art 2 expands the student’s knowledge of the arts and goes more in depth into the mediums and techniques introduced in Art 1.  Students are exposed to more drawing and painting exercises as well as block printing, and pen/ink, scratchboards, and mixed media work. They will be encouraged to experiment and push themselves to expand their creative potential, enhance their art skills and start to develop their own style.  Throughout the year students will be working on a portfolio of artwork.  By the end of the year, students will have produced a portfolio that can be used for AP studio art or college applications.

​Elements and Principles Group Posters

Each students chooses two Elements and/or Principles to create a poster for each.  Posters must include the name and definition of said Elements and Principles, as well as contain artwork that clearly demonstrates the Element or Principle.
   Total = 30 points




​Self Portraits #1

-Size of piece was at least 18”x24” (15 points)
-No blank, empty space (15 points)
- Student Self portrait was thoughtful (in any style and media) and related to the student’s personality and character, based upon their    explanation in the student’s self-evaluation question #2 (40 points) 
-Background complements the figure and help add meaning and creativity to the piece (15 points)
 -Completed the self-evaluation, in detail, upon finishing the self-portrait (15 points)
     Total = 100 points




​Still Life- Easels With Color Focus

- Draw an interesting area or intersection of the wooden easels set up as a still life
​- Create an interesting composition by cropping
- Use contour lines in pencil
- Choose one area of focus to shade and complete in color just in that specific region
- Show craftsmanship and attention to detail
    Total = 50 points




​Text Portrait
   
                                                       
- No blank white space, within the figure as well as in the background (10 points)
- Enlarged using the grid method to correct proportions (20 points)
- 5 values evident, created through text, which contours and denotes shape and form (30 points)
- Done in pen, a consistent color/type throughout (10 points)
- Text is significant to the subject of the piece (20 points)
-Craftsmanship- neat, clean, no pencil/eraser marks, not wrinkly, shows time and effort spent (10 points)

    Total = 100 points




​Interactive Photo

Take a photo digitally, with which you will overlap a portion with a drawn version that is not really there, but reads as if it does fit into the scene.  The drawing should  be something interesting, creative, and neatly done.  The final product is in a digital format.




​Collage Painting
​Create a collage on a 12x16 inch paper.  When complete, choose a 3x4 inch area of your collage to blow-up and re-create on an 18x24 inch paper.  Use the grid method to help you re-draw.  Complete with paint, and try your best to mix accurate colors true to the original section. 
- Grid/drawn accurately (25 points)
- Color matching (50 points)
- Neatness, no white space, paint covering all areas (25 points)
      Total= 120 points






​Emotion Project
After receiving a paper written by Ms. Vaughn's English students, create an original  piece of art that brings to life the emotion the student chose to personify.  Any material or medium is acceptable. 
- If done on paper, the paper should be no smaller than 18"x24".
- The piece should have at least some sort of 3D element to it, some sort of risen textural component to make it more than just a piece of paper.
- If 2D, a background is required.
- Must have a human-like figure/form as the personification of the emotion.
- Must reflect/connect to the original written prompt created by the English student.
- Must be creative and well-crafted.
      Total = 100 points




​Still Life- White Objects

     Total= 50 points




​Keith Haring Group Project

After watching the video on Keith Haring, create a LARGE Keith Haring inspired piece with several of your peers.  Make sure to capture Haring bold lines, colors, and symbolic shapes!    
     Total = 50 points




​3 Point Perspective/ Ed Ruscha Inspired

Draw the exterior of a building or equivalent structure using 3 point perspective.  Create an interesting composition with overlapping shapes.  Incorporate text into your piece in a style similar to Ed Ruscha and utilize his style.  Use ACRYLIC paint to complete your picture and leave no pencil lines visible.  Create strong shadows by using areas of color.  Limit your color palette and avoid "normal" colors (sky does not have to be blue).  Be creative!
- All items drawn in correct perspective (20 points
- Strong painting technique- clean edges, solid areas of color (20 points)
- Consistent light source show on all items, shadows are present (20 points)
- Creative use of text- text is well integrated into the image (20 points)
- Very neatly drawn: ruler used for perspective lines, guidelines FULLY ERASED (20 points)
- High level of creativity (20 points)
​     Total = 120 points






​Cardboard Big Heads - Inspired by Wayne White 
- Make a large head out of cardboard, paper mache, paint, and any other mixed media materials.
- Heads must be 2 to 3 times larger than your own head.
- The head must be able to fit on your own head (wear it).
     Total = 100 points






​Stop-motion Videos

Using the app "imotion," create a stop-motion video on the theme "Night time."  Videos should be at least 30 seconds long.

​Watercolor Techniques
Pick 10 of the 14 watercolor techniques listed below.  Divide up a large piece of watercolor paper into 10 portions and demonstrate your use of each technique.  Label each one in each.  Total = 30 points
          1) 4 values of one color (separate each one)                                        8) Rubbing Alcohol Dots with Q-tips
          2) Wet-in-wet                                                                                          9) Graduated Wash
          3) Dry Brush                                                                                              10) Stencil (with masking tape)
          4) Salt                                                                                                         11) Stippling (dots
          5) Plastic Wrap Blot                                                                                 12) Dripping Water
          6) Tissue Blot                                                                                            13) Pen and Ink
          7) Wax Resist (with white crayon)                                                        14) Transparency






​Watercolor Calendars

- Must have a creative, unique theme throughout 
- Must have 12 months (start from June) 
- Creatively woven/attached/tied together to be hung on a wall
- Neatly have months/days written in ink
- At least half of each page should be taken up by the watercolor image
     Total = 100 points






Self-Portrait, Take Two
​
- Self-portrait of YOUR face/representation of YOU!
- No smaller than 8"x 10'
- Must have a background that tells the viewer about you or reveals your psyche, passions, etc.  Th background should be thoughtful and specific to you.
