- Recreate the Mona Lisa. Make sure to include a background. Use ink or color- NOT JUST PENCIL. Read about the painting and artist. On the back, write 15 bullet point notes about anything you learn. Telling me the name of the painting and the artist doesn't count as a bullet ;)
- Begin work on your Weebly! See full directions here. DUE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th.
- Paint or draw something on a unusual surface, something that was not meant to turned into a piece of art, something that you find and recycle such as a newspaper, a receipt, a sign, etc.
4. Copy the whole first page from the "head tilting" packet supplied to you in class. DO NOT TRACE! Make your drawings slightly larger than the originals, and fill 2 whole pages in your sketchbook.
5. Bookmark contest. Flyer with directions given out in class.
6. You will be given a work of art done by a kindergarten student. Significantly add to this piece and make it your own, following in Basquiat's style. Use mixed media and go wild.
7. Research the art movement, "Pop Art" and take 10 bullet point notes in your sketchbook. Then, on a separate page, create a work of art inspired by Andy Warhol. Artwork should be completed in your sketchbook and done IN COLOR using any media you prefer. Don't just copy one of his pieces, or some other artist's, make up your own.
8. Draw the inside of your room or a room in your house, at school, or any scene FROM LIFE (meaning you see it in front of you, NOT in a photo), as long as it it using 1 point perspective. Use pencil and take up the whole page in your sketchbook. Shade, add detail, and spend at least 20 minutes on this.
9. On your "Blog" page on your Weebly, please post about 3 CONTEMPORARY (still alive) visual artists (any media but must be a VISUAL artist, not performing artist. For each artist, write a 3-5 sentence bio on them about their life and look/style of work, and include 3-5 images of examples of their work. In addition, include a few sentences for each artist bout WHY you like their work. Click here to browse artist son some cool art websites.
10. Draw something, FROM LIFE, in two point perspective. Add detail and shade!
11. Using a blank card and envelop supplied to you in class, create a holiday card for someone you care about. Use mixed media and make both the outside of the card and inside visually appealing.
12. Create 2 affirmation cards! Don't leave a lot of boring blank white space, and try to make the affirmations specific to YOU and what would cheer you up or pump you up specifically in YOUR life right now. Each card should reflect about 30 minutes of work. Mixed media encouraged
13. Explore the "My Modern Met" website here. Spend at least 15 minutes browsing and reading through any articles that strike your fancy. You can scroll through by date of publication or browse by topic in the upper tool bar. Find 3 articles that you GENUINELY were intrigued by and found interesting. On the "BLOG" page of your Weebly, create a post that discusses your 3 favorite articles. You should have a paragraph (AT LEAST 4-5 sentences) for EACH article explaining what it was about, why you found it interesting or liked it, and how it connects to art (why is it even on the Met website?). Feel free to add images you save from the article or provide specific links to that article's page. Please write this as something you would submit to your English class, meaning check your spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc. and cite titles and authors of the articles.
14. Logo design for the 9 x 12 Mira Costa All Media Art Show. See flyer here. (Due on Feb. 1st with CC#15)

16. In honor of Black History month, choose 3 African Americans that you admire, from any genre or field (musicians, athletes, artists, writers, actors, activists, etc.). Write 3 paragraphs about each, describing them, and also why you like them. Then, create an interesting piece of art that incorporates some aspect or allusion to all 3 people. Mixed media is encouraged. Please make your art work look like a finished piece, and that you spend at least an hour on this assignment. It's worth triple this week! *Complete assignment on larger paper supplied to you in class.
17. Find a photo from the internet, a magazine, newspaper, etc. Cut off part of the photo and glue the remaining portion into your sketchbook. Remake the rest of the photo (different from the original) as an extension of it. Be creative and unique- the weirder the better! Requirements? Must spend at least 30 minutes on this and use something MORE THAN JUST PENCIL, like pen, color pencils, markers, paint, etc. Check out an example here.
Spring 2019
- Using Christiane Spangsberg's work as inspiration (check her out on Instagram), create a free flowing abstract painting. Your painting doesn’t need to look like anything. Do not worry about what “it is” or is “supposed to be”. Let it flow and just come out naturally. Try to ABSTRACT shapes and forms. Be simple, clear, and clean cut. Don't worry about shading, values, or blending. Play with positive and negative space. ADVANCED: Incorporate elements of her style with your own. Click here to see a wonderful student example.
- Make a "Shrinky Dink" design of your choice! I will provide the materials and explain the process to you in class. You can create whatever you'd like, as long as you use some paint. Brainstorm ahead of time about what you'd like to use your creation for. For example: keychains, earrings, necklaces, mobiles, magnets, pins- the sky is the limit! For some inspiration, click here.
- Paint a planter. I will provide a baby terra cotta pot for you in class. Decorate however you see fit, using paint of course. Click here for some fun styles and designs saved from Pinterest.
- Find a color photograph from a magazine or newspaper that is around 8 x 10 inches in size. Fold the photo in half, and cut it down the middle. Then glue the half onto a piece of Bristol Board paper. Your challenge this week is recreate the other half of the photograph. Draw it out first lightly in pencil, then fill it in with paint. The goal is to color match as true to the original photo as possible. Don't use paint straight from the tube, mix on your palette as best you can to match the colors. Requirements? The original photo needs to contain several colors and can't be black and white. Also, try to use a visually interesting picture, NOT something like a receipt or menu ripped in half! See example below.

- Transform a print of a famous painting! You will be able to choose a print from a stack provided in class. Paint directly on top of it and do whatever you feel like! Mixed media encouraged. In addition, please research the original piece and write down information you learn about it, the artist, style, time period, etc. on a notecard. Example project below.
3. Bring an object to school to paint on! It can be anything besides paper- for example, a skateboard, shoes, a hat, etc.
4. To go with our wood eyes hanging in the class (painted by former students), we will be painting mouths on wood discs. The discs will be supplied to you, and you will have class time on Thursday and Friday to work on this. Make your "mouth" as realistic or whacky as you want!
5. Decorate (paint) the copy of the Art Night poster given to you in class. Hang it up somewhere in the community, outside the school even, and/or post on your social media.
6. Worth double this week! Flesh recipes + two block heads and two value scales (one black and white, one flesh colored)
7. Read and highlight the article on Fauvism and take 10 bullet point notes in your sketchbook. Then create a small fauvist portrait inspired by Matisse's The Green Stripe.
8. Dallas Clayton is an artist and writer, whose work is colorful, positive, thoughtful, and up-lifting. Please check out his Instagram to get a feel of his work. One of my favorite things that he does, is make pieces of art and then purposefully leaves then places for a stranger to randomly find and thus brighten their day. Inspired by his work, I want you to paint something positive this week to send out to the world! Paint/write something on a small piece of paper (or any other material you would prefer), and try to keep your image simple, colorful, clear, and encouraging. Imagine what would make you smile if you saw it while walking down the street. After your piece has dried, I want you to either give it to someone that would appreciate it, or place it somewhere (outside of your own home and outside of this classroom), for a stranger to find (use a piece of tape to stick it somewhere so it doesn't blow away). If you choose to place your piece of art in an environment, for example you push pin it onto a lamppost, take a picture of it where you left it, and send it to me through Canvas (or through
e-mail). If you choose to give it to someone specific, take a photo of that person, and you perhaps too, with their new gift. Please understand that what you make for this assignment is meant to be given away and let go, and is meant to spread positivity, love, and hope.
9. Make a mixed media (paint plus some other material) postcard to mail to someone that you are thankful for. Make sure to
make both sides visually appealing, and write the person's address.
10. To prepare for our Impressionism project, make a "trading card" on an Impressionist artist of your choice. The front should use mixed media to visually describe their art or images of the artist themselves (be creative). The back side should have "Stats" on your artist. Please also include descriptions of their work, subject matter, bio info, etc.
11. Paint and decorate a holiday ornament (supplied to you in class)! Don't feel like it needs to be related to the holidays though. You can paint whatever you'd like on it.
